The Division

The Numerical Methods for Plasma Physics (NMPP) division is part of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in Garching, Germany. The division is led by Prof. Eric Sonnendrücker and develops advanced numerical methods and simulation software for plasma physics, with applications to magnetic confinement fusion in tokamaks and stellarators such as Wendelstein 7-X.

Research

Our work spans geometric numerical integration, structure-preserving finite element methods, kinetic and gyrokinetic simulation, magnetohydrodynamics, turbulence modelling, and probabilistic data analysis. A unifying theme is the design of algorithms that respect the geometric and variational structure of plasma models, leading to long-time stability and conservation of physical invariants.

Software Codes

NMPP software includes GeometricIntegrators.jl for symplectic and variational integration, PSYDAC for isogeometric analysis and compatible finite element discretizations, GEMPICX, BSL6D, and Gyselalib++ for kinetic and gyrokinetic simulations, GVEC for 3D MHD equilibria, STRUPHY for structure-preserving hybrid simulations, and GeometricMachineLearning.jl for structure-preserving machine learning.
